Until now, any UVI Soundware update (even a fix to a few presets) meant re-downloading the whole .ufs file, often several GB. Since version 3.1.0, UVI Portal can now install patches instead.
What a patch is?
- A patch is a small file containing only what changed in the soundware (presets, scripts, samples,...).
- It is installed in the same folder as the soundware, with the same name plus ".patch". For example, "Falcon Factory.ufs" gets "Falcon Factory.ufs.patch" next to it. Note: If you copy or move a soundware by hand, you must keep the .ufs.patch file next to the .ufs. Without it, the instrument goes back to the original version.
- The original .ufs soundware file is never modified. UVI Player and Falcon load the patch on top of it automatically.
- A patch only works with the exact version of the soundware it was made for.
- The soundware version shown in UVI Portal is the patched version (e.g. 1.0.0 + patch = 1.0.2).
- Each .ufs soundware file has at most one patch, and a new patch replaces the previous one. Patches don't stack.
How does it work?
- Already have the soundware: UVI Portal only downloads the patch (one step, 1/1). This is usually a few MB instead of several GB.
- New install, or a version too old to be patched: UVI Portal downloads the full soundware, then the patch, shown as two steps (1/2, then 2/2).
- No patch available: same as before, only the full soundware.
Checks and repair
- After installing, UVI Portal checks that each patch is valid and matches the installed soundware.
- If a patch is damaged, missing, or doesn't match (for example the .ufs file was replaced by hand with another version), UVI Portal reports the original soundware version. The update is then offered again, and installing it repairs the soundware.
- Uninstalling a soundware also removes its patch.
Troubleshooting
- If an update keeps coming back, the patch is probably not being loaded. Reinstalling the full soundware from UVI Portal resolves it.
- If a "patch verification failed" error occurs while downloading the patch, uninstall then reinstall the product to resolve this.
